You may be familiar with several adaptations of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. I was best acquainted with Stephen Spielberg's film version starring Tom Cruise. But, oh, that was before.

No one asked for it, but here it is: a prog rock concept album version of The War of the Worlds, complete with electric guitar and synthesizers. Wonderfully, Jeff Wayne retains the Victorian era setting rather than modernizing it, as most adaptations choose to. The use of leitmotifs, however simple, is largely effective. The music, for me, is most effective when it is least musical; the theramin-sounding alien signal and the cry of "Ulla!" chillingly signal the Martians' presence.

I hear this one was a big part of people's childhoods. I think, were it a part of mine, it would trigger enough nostalgia for me to call myself a fan. As it is, it's a curiosity I'm glad to have encountered, and one I'll continue to share purely for the weirdness factor.

stay weird,

ali.
